Silver and I just don’t get along.
I’ve always viewed polishing silver as a miserable, dirty task– Consequently, the silver pieces in my house are generally tarnished, ugly, and unfit to be seen by guests and the can of silver polish sits in the very back of the cleaning cabinet, to be used only the most extreme of emergencies (i.e., a visit from my mother). Until now.
I have found a way to clean my silver safely, cheaply, easily, and effectively– and as an added bonus, it makes for a great science experiment you can do with your kids! All you need is a piece of aluminum foil, hot water, and ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda. Yes, friends. ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda does more than naturally boost and freshen your laundry detergent. It also makes silver sparkly and shiny again!
I used my sink for the silver polishing project, and boiled the water so that it would be as hot as possible. Boiling isn’t necessary, but my silver was pretty badly tarnished, so I figured it couldn’t hurt.
See what I mean? Ugh. I have a bunch of really lovely serving utensils that I haven’t used in ages, simply because they needed polishing. I was skeptical about whether this polishing method would work for utensils in such horrible shape, but… Well, you’ll just have to see for yourself.
I also have a few decorative pieces, like this silver trophy cup, which I use to hold my toothbrush. It has been dark with tarnish for years. I clean the inside regularly, of course, but I gave up on the outside a long time ago.
After putting a piece of aluminum foil in my sink, I poured in a few tablespoons of ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda. Next, I poured in a pot of boiling water. The water immediately began reacting with the soda and bubbling.
Once I dipped the trophy cup in the water, the tarnish immediately left the moment the cup touched the aluminum foil! Here’s what it looked like after I dipped only one side of the cup in the water! Amazing, right? Some pieces just needed a dip for the tarnish to come right off. Others, like my serving ware, still had some tarnish on them when I pulled them out of the water– but it came right off when I polished them with a clean, dry dishtowel. In no time, everything was looking good as new!
I did go through several sinkfuls of the water/ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda mixture to get everything clean. You’ll find that the water quickly becomes black with tarnish after only a few things go in. Still, the whole process was so easy, it was no problem to refill, dip, and dry off with a towel. In just a few minutes, my serving ware looked like this.
I still can’t believe it!
I also can’t believe it took me this long to learn this silver polishing secret! I feel like such a rube.
ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda is going to be a staple in my home from now on– Not only does it clean silver, it also can be used on tough laundry stains, kitchen and bathroom surfaces, small appliances, cookware, and to polish jewelry, stainless steel, copper and most brass. In addition to cleaning, it neutralizes and eliminates odors. It’s inexpensive (especially compared to other silver polishes!) and it’s 100% fragrance and phosphate free. Arm & Hammer™ Super Washing Soda has been around since 1874, so they must be doing something right!
You can find ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda at Dollar General, Walmart, and other major retailers. I can’t recommend it highly enough. Oh, and if you want to turn this into a fun science project to do with your kids, you can find an excellent scientific explanation of how/why this process works here.
As if that’s not enough, I’m giving one of you a $100 VISA gift card! To enter to win it, leave a comment here telling me how you’d use ARM & HAMMER™ Super Washing Soda in your home!
