I am a die-hard cook, but I am NOT a morning person. So while I love breakfast foods, they have to be fairly easy or else they’re beyond the capabilities of my morning personality. Recently, I read an article with the stunning news that made-from-scratch pancake batter was absolutely no better (or even significantly cheaper) than buying pancake mix in a box. This, my friends, was NEWS! Pancakes for everyone! And IHOP at Home©‘s new line of syrups (graciously sent for me to test out) to go on top!

These were my ingredients for a special surprise pancake morning for my kids. I had everything on hand, but a little creativity made this breakfast extra special.

I began by simply adding water to the pancake mix. This actually marks the first time I’ve used premade pancake mix. I have been SO STUPID.

On the griddle, I added in a few chocolate chips for extra yumminess.

Once I saw (and tasted) the finished product, I had to admit that the box mix pancakes actually weren’t as good as my made-from-scratch versions. They were better.

For the kids, I drew inspiration from IHOP’s kids’ pancake faces and added banana and chocolate chip eyes, a dollop of whipped cream for the nose, and a big blueberry smile. Then I told them to come down to the kitchen for a big surprise.

They were thrilled!

The kids loved the faces, but they were just as excited by the range of syrups to choose from. We had Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity© Strawberry, Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity© Blueberry, and Original flavored syrups at our disposal. Both of them went for the blueberry flavored syrup, but they both opted for strawberry the next time we had pancakes (which was the very next morning!)

It’s safe to say my big pancake surprise was a HUGE SUCCESS.

And I have to say, the flavored syrups in particular were a wonderful surprise. They were sweet and delicious, and they made the pancakes taste like a major dessert-style treat.

Both my kids are picky eaters, and ordinarily when I fix them pancakes, they only eat about half of the two I give them-if that much. Not this time! These kids cleaned their plates! My kids were worried about running out of the Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity Strawberry and Rooty Tooty Fresh & Fruity Blueberry syrups; I had to promise them we’d buy more when they ran out! I love these syrup options for special occasions.

For more “ordinary” pancake mornings, I love that IHOP at Home also has Lite and Sugar Free syrup options. I’m always looking for ways to shave off calories without my kids noticing, so these syrups definitely fit the bill.

    Sorry, but I have to disagree here.  In the past I made instant pancakes all the time and they were what I had grown up with as well.  Then as I became more conscience about what I was eating I started making things from whole ingredients including pancakes for my daughter on occasion.  I was surprised how easy it is to make them from scratch and in my opinion they were waaay better too.  I know everyone has different tastes though.  I also greatly prefer real maple syrup to artificial but, again, that is just me….
    I love the idea of using fruit to make little faces on the pancakes!  I will have to try that one!  Very cute.

    We LOVE pancakes around here – I grew up with my mom making homemade pancakes from an ancient betty crocker cookbook every Saturday morning and I’ve continued that tradition with my husband and soon-to-be-born baby girl…I love the idea of getting those flavored syrups at home, we love them at iHop!

    I am totally on board with the pancake-from-a-box bunch! Two things I NEVER make from scratch, because they aren’t any better (in my opinion), and they’re more trouble than they’re worth: pancakes and brownies.

    I wonder if you could use the batter to make waffles instead of pancakes. We like waffles better but I really hate the hassle of making the batter. This could be a big win!

    OK, so I do love the Pioneer brand of baking mix better than another name brand.  I DO LOVE homemade pancakes and my kids CAN taste a difference, but maybe the pancake sauce will make the mix taste better.  I have tried the frozen items and they are a bit pricey.  Is the syrup pricey?  I will definitely give them a try!

    I am excited to try these new syrups. My daughter and I must eat gluten-free, so we cannot have pancakes at IHOP anymore. Since these syrups are gluten-free, we’ll be able to make gluten-free pancakes and home but use the IHOP syrup – Yum!

    Love the Happy Face pancakes!! :-)   Wow, these syrups sound great, we haven’t tried any yet, but my family is always excited about syrup with our homemade pancakes and waffles! Yum!!  I want to try the Lite one first. :-)
