>Courtney Cox, I’m Calling You Out

  1. Akinoluna says:

    >Geez. I was all, “hmm, something wrong with the sunglasses? T-shirt? Looking like she has no pants on?” Didn’t even notice there was a kid in the boat…

  2. picklemom4 says:

    >My 7 year old walked in the office as that picture was popping up on the screen and he said “that’s not safe”. When I asked him what wasn’t safe about it, he said “that little girl isn’t wearing one of those vest things”… and he’s never even been on a boat!Sheesh, even HE knew…

  3. >Yes, Courtney, the Lou and Lou Safety patrol would be ALL OVER THAT!

  4. >I’m with Akinoluna. I apparently have so much to learn before I have kids!

  5. whoorl says:

    >Oh, wow. She doesn’t strike me as the type to forget something SO important.(I can say this due to our super-tight relationship…um, via US Weekly.)

  6. Nap Warden says:

    >Wow, unbelievable! I was all over it when I saw that pic. I don’t even know what to say except, as a mom she should know better…

  7. Joan S. says:

    >Ummm..I agree TOTALLY that the child should be wearing a life vest. But why are we all over just Courteney? Coco has two parents and they are both RIGHT THERE! David Arquette–where was your common sense?

  8. >Well, to me David Arquette seems like a goober, while Courtney has always come across as being extremely level-headed. So my reasons for blaming Courtney are completely arbitrary.

  9. Jessica says:

    >Thank you thank you thank you. I was shocked when I saw this yesterday.

  10. mamatulip says:

    >I saw this recently and I wondered the same thing!

  11. Dutch says:

    >meh, she’s sitting on her dad’s lap. we have no idea how deep that water is (it might be only be or three feet deep). I don’t think it’s that big of a deal. I go swimming with my 2-year-old daughter all the time in 3-5 foot water without a lifevest or those water wings. an attentive parent is way more important than a life vest. in some places you just need to have the vest or whatever in the boat with you. besides, they might have forgotten the vest because they were in such a hurry to get away from the paparazzi who follow them everywhere in order to feed our desire to constantly judge celebrity parents.

  12. >Yeah, I’m not sure she can blame that oversight on “being country”.

  13. Kathy says:

    >Without even reading your post – the first thing I said when I saw that picture was “Where’s Coco’s life jacket?”.Both her parents are there so the blame falls to both of them. It’s always better to be safe than sorry.

  14. Bitsy Parker says:

    >I was so confused because I thought that was YOU paddling the boat!!!

  15. Gertie says:

    >Rich kids float better. Duh.

  16. T with Honey says:

    >That water may be shallow, the girl may be able to swim but… if that boat flips over and bonks her on the head that girl is gonna sink. Plus the fear that can set in when the boat flips!I realize that she may not be able to just run into the mart like I did and pick up a life vest for $25 but doesn’t she have ‘people’ that could do it for her. And didn’t any of their ‘people’ point out how dangerous this could be. You’ve got it right… Gah!Oh, Lindsay… why is your website coming up with all sorts of Spanish labels? I know I didn’t change my computer or browser settings.

  17. T with Honey says:

    >OK – I swear all the labels were in spanish when I was writing that comment. Now everything is back to English. Sorry ’bout that.

  18. Kelly says:

    >Yeah, I noticed that, like right away. But also, did you see David Arquette’s arms? Surprisingly buff. He always seemed kind of doughy to me.

  19. Mixed Up Me says:

    >I agree with you. She should have on a life vest! I don’t care how well her parents can swim . . .

  20. SmocknMama says:

    >OK, I agree that the child should be wearing a life safety flotation device of some sort (there are quite a few that are regulatory). I grew up on boats (in the sea) so yes, i get it.Isn’t David the girls father? Why are you blasting Courtney ONLY? Isn’t he just as responsible for the girl’s safety as Courtney?

  21. Kimberly says:

    >Not to mention the sharks…holy crap.

  22. Heather says:

    >Wow…even my expert oceanographer son I make wear a life vest when out on the boat. Gesh.

  23. Hope says:

    >Immediately my focus went to the child with no lifejacket. All week were photos of the Brangelina bunch wearing their lifejackets. I’m suprised you didn’t give both parents a calling out, after all it seems like David is just sitting back there. Maybe Courtney is rushing her daughter to safety by paddling. (jk)

  24. Sarah says:

    >The life vest isn’t always safer. When I was 6, I went on a Girl Scout boating trip. I was wearing a life vest and so when I fell overboard and got stuck under the boat, I was actually STUCK UNDER THE BOAT. The life vest was floating me upwards but in my case the boat was blocking me from air and the life vest was too restrictive to allow me to move sideways. In the end, it was an attentive Girl Scout leader who didn’t have a life vest on who managed to pull me out from underneath the boat, but any longer and I’d be dead today. And without the life vest, it wouldn’t have happened because I could have moved enough to get myself out of there. I wasn’t the best swimmer at the time but it’s pretty much instinct at that point to paddle toward the light and oxygen – but the life vest wouldn’t let me move and kept me stuck under the boat. That was literally the last time I wore a life vest.Yes, life vests are generally safer. But not always.

  25. >A life jacket is something most people forget until they need it. I used to be like that, but I got over it. Now I wear a life jacket just to get across my lawn sprinkler.

  26. Kathy says:

    >Okay Sarah — that’s like saying don’t make your child wear a seatbelt when riding in a car because if you wreck they could be trapped inside your car!!!!!

  27. Jenifer says:

    >My husband is a master diver, we live close to the coast and own a boat. My children NEVER even get NEAR the water without a life vest.I agree, WHAT THE HELL WAS SHE THINKING???

  28. >Clearly they’re relying on the power of David Arquette’s chest hair.Not such a bad idea…

  29. Mir says:

    >Okay, I am not defending Courtney, just pointing out what may have happened. We have kayaks, and my little girl who never throws a fit about anything refused to wear her vest. She hated them because she felt like they were choking her. So, she didn’t ride. That’s the appropriate response. However, we did fight with her to get them on, and she did throw a total fit while we tried to put it on. After I read this yesterday, I thought about that and then thought, “has anyone noticed that celeb kids never throw a fit in public?” Next thought was “damn, a tantruming celebuspawn would be ALL OVER the tabs.” It’s possible that they do things, like not making her wear a vest, to keep her happy in front of the pap, because the alternative is bad publicity they have no control over. Not saying it’s right, and definitely saying I’m so happy that I don’t have a camera following me around all day, every day! Personally I’d applaud them for taking on such a battle, but I can see how one might cut corners to avoid such a situation….How’s that for a back story?

  30. FENICLE says:

    >No kidding! I saw this pic online & wondered the same. The water can’t be that shallow? And I agree. The husband is a big time goober.

  31. Anonymous says:

    >I can’t believe everyone would be judging Courney when the father is right there in the boat! Why are women held to such a higher standard and then judged by society, and ESPECIALLY other women as being a poor parent and failing in some significant way? Parenting is a partnership, therefore they get equal blame.

  32. Christy says:

    >It doesn’t matter how attentive the parent is or how annoying the paparazzi. If a wave came, or some one in the boat leaned the wrong way and tipped the boat over, or if the girl tried to stand and fell over, you cannot see clearly enough in that water. It doesn’t matter how deep, and there could be currents. It would be hard for the parent to locate her and get her out without a lifejacket. There is no excuse for putting your child at risk.

  33. >Anonymous, I don’t really identify with David Arquette as a father, because I’m not one, and because most fathers I know are at least a little less concerned with child safety than their wives.I’m writing as a mother and I think most of these other women are, because that’s the role I identify with. So I’m more disturbed that Courtney, as a mother, would let this happen.Besides, David, as we all know, is a goober. I can’t stress that enough.

  34. annie says:

    >I agree, as a MOTHER, we are instinctively the over protective ones. It’s our job.Anyone who’s arguing against the life jacket is probably headed to the thinning of their personal gene pool. It’s not “survival of the fittest” as to whose baby can swim. We’re NOT fish. It’s “survival of the offspring from the smartest mother”, who puts her little ones in life jackets ANYwhere near water.

  35. Anonymous says:

    >I’m with Dutch on this one. Maybe it is because I grew up spending my summers on the beach and in boats, but I didn’t really think much of this. Both parents are right there, and the water looks calm. Frankly, a short car ride to the grocery store (while strapped into a car seat) is more dangerous than this.

  36. Star says:

    >Apparently Courtney isn’t as popular as Brittney as i did not see this photo splashed om weekly gossip mags, or on the news. ye I think it is equally aggregious as not puttig a child in a car seat.

  37. Jayne says:

    >Eh… since I’m not a particularly good mother (but don’t tell my son… he thinks I’m the best EVER), I have a hard time getting on someone’s case about this. I think it’s far more dangerous not to spend time with them at all.

  38. Jayne says:

    >Oh… first time here.. love the blog, by the way. 🙂

  39. MizMell says:

    >I’m with you 100 percent. This is just as bad as those morons that allow kids to ride in the back of pick-up trucks!

  40. >Courtney’s stock just went down in my books!

  41. Anonymous says:

    >i CANNOT BELIEVE u guys are judging her!!! FIRST OF ALL her name is spelled courtEney..second why dont we go judge britney spears who let her kids on a REAL BOAT without life jackets..and both of them are YOUNGER THAN COCO!!!! I THINK COURTENEY IS A GREAT MOTHER AND THEY WERENT GOING FAST ENOUGH TO HURT A FLY!!!!..and im pretty sure if coco woulda fallen..they coulda easily gotten her..you guys are low lives

  42. Anonymous says:

    >OMG THIS IS ABSOLUTELY STUPID. Coco is freakin SITTING IN THE BOAT with BOTH her parents. and she is ON HER FATHER’S LAP. i SERIOUSLY dont think she’s going to fall out, they dont appear to be going fast at all. and if ANYTHING WERE TO HAPPEN, the first thing Courteney and David would do before saving themselves would be to save THEIR DAUGHTER.WHY MAKE SUCH A BIG DEAL OUT OF SUCH STUPID THINGS JUST BECA– USE PEOPLE ARE FAMOUS??? its not like people are going to say “oh oh courteney cox doesn’t make her kid wear a life jacket, so we wont either!!” this is insanely crazy.

  43. >It’s a big deal because one of my closest friend’s 3-year-old daughter drowned in four feet of water while her mother was just a few feet away from her.Three-year-olds should never be in water like this without a life jacket. Adding insult to injury, in the Arquettes’ case, taking Coco out without a life jacket was against the law. Drownings happen far more often than you’d think.
