“I read your Parents-dot-com post about Bruiser,” my mom said on the phone yesterday. “Sounds like he’s quite a handful.”
“Oh no, really he’s incredibly easy,” I insisted. I’m still holding out hope, after all, that the moon will turn out to be made of cheese and my mom will agree to keep the kids so that Hubs and I can take a honeymoon trip. “I just write that stuff, you know, to keep people entertained. Bruiser just likes to uhhhh, sit quietly and play with his toys all da- OWWWW!” I finished as my son sank his teeth into my knee. “Ahem.”
My mom wasn’t fooled. “Well, I have a solution for you,” she said. “You need to get yourself a small switch and just switch his legs with it whenever he does something he’s not supposed to do.”
“Mom, he’s a baby, not a horse,” I said patiently.
“I’m serious,” she continued. “Just a small switch. You’ll only have to use it a time or two. After that, keep it nearby and just show it to him whenever he’s acting up. That’s all it’ll take.”
There was a long silence.
“Hello?!” Mom said crankily.
“I’m… agape,” I said finally. My mom laughed. “Mom, I don’t think he’s old enough yet to even make the connection between a spanking and the bad thing he did. And if I ever did spank him, I’d only use my hand.”
“Well, it’s an idea,” she said. “And I think it’ll work.”
“Okay, then, when I buy a horse, I’ll keep that in mind,” I said.
Sheesh.
